“Roll out those lazy-hazy-crazy days of summer”*! After so many dull, gray and cold days, we are ready to welcome sunny days, bright colors, flowers, and floating white clouds. In my case, I’m also looking forward to plunging in my favourite element, water (beach or pool). This means it’s time to go on a shopping spree for new swimsuits and beach-style fashion.
Swimsuits 2022
I’m so glad one-piece swimsuits have become hot in the past couple of years. For the longest time, the style was considered “old woman’s bathing suit”. But the recent innovations in fashion cuts and fabrics have made the style a sought-after look for young women.
One-piece swimsuits are definitely flattering on women over 40. In my opinion, the style looks sophisticated, unassuming, and elegant regardless of age. And I’ve always been infatuated with the look of Hollywood celebrities such as Marilyn Monroe, Sophia Loren, and Pamela Anderson. Besides, one-piece swimwear, with the right fit and fabric, keeps everything tucked in neatly – you know what I mean (wink).
I don’t believe women should be concerned about looking “appropriate for their age”. We should wear whatever we want. But if you are particular about your look (like me), then this can be a style option.
How to wear a one-piece swimsuit
After turning 40, my body didn’t look as firm and tight as it did in my twenties and thirties. Some people might think that I’m thin but I consider myself an average-weight person with an acceptable muscle tone; not too firm and not too loose. Plus, like many, I have cellulite on my thighs (sigh) and recently around my waist. I do work out a lot but I also eat a lot so, underneath these clothes, I’m super average. What I’m about to share is based on my experience and the styles I bought over the past 3 years.
Quality & Price
When it comes to one-piece swimsuits or even bikinis, the two things I take into consideration are quality and price. Based on my experience, a good quality swimsuit is made with Polyester, Nylon or Polyester PBT. These fabrics are commonly used in competitive swimwear. The material offers comfort, breathability, UV protection, elasticity, and water resistance. Such qualities come with a price tag so expect to spend more on swimsuits if you want comfort, structure, and dryness.
Style
As for style, I choose cuts that flatter the waistline, perk up the melons and flatten the belly. These are the most common spots women over 40 complain about. To do so, look for swimsuits with built-in bust support, gathered material around the waist, vertical lines, color blocks, and large patterns.
As for legs, there’s not much we can do about them, other than wearing coverups and heels (like I do)!
Avoid this cut
Unless you have an athletic shape, I would avoid the Baywatch cut! As sexy as it looks, I find this cut makes me look square, and flat, and doesn’t have enough support!
Must-have swimsuit styles
According to renowned fashion reports, black is the hottest color of the year in swimsuits for women. animal prints, shimmer swimwear, and ruffles are also in style and come in different looks, whether one-piece or bikini. Ruched (or gathered) are forgiving and help accentuate the waistline. Ribbed fabric is stylish and versatile as these pieces can be worn as bodysuits as well. Take a look at my personal favourite styles for women over 40.
