Learn how to feel relaxed during your boudoir photo session
Last June, I wrote about my Boudoir photo session experience and why it was a fun gift idea for my hubby on Father’s Day. Some readers were intrigued by the idea and asked me to share my boudoir photos for inspiring shoot ideas and outfits.
I hesitated to share such personal and intimate boudoir photos on the world wide web for the longest time. That meant everyone on the face of Earth will be able to see pictures that are intended to be private. This is a horrifying thought for someone who’s had a professional image in the corporate world and is about to risk her reputation by exposing personal boudoir photos. I even published an article about the topic on Medium. Please take the time to read it. But, the fact that my readers felt comfortable asking questions and needed some guidance is truly worth the risk. As you know, Elle Muse is a place for women to share opinions and experiences. Therefore, I have decided to give some tips and photo ideas that I hope you’ll find useful while planning your boudoir session.
Some simple tips to consider for your boudoir photo session
Work with a female photographer
Don’t take this the wrong way. I don’t have anything against male photographers, and I realize many are respectful and professional. But if you are a reserved woman, your self-awareness will heighten during a boudoir photo session. You might feel embarrassed about showing your skin and posing in intimate wear in front of a stranger. I felt more relaxed working with a female photographer because I can share my insecurities about this type of photography with her.
Shop your closet
You don’t need to buy new lingerie pieces for a boudoir photo shoot. In fact, if you are more risque than I am, you don’t even need anything to wear. But, if you are considering a “modest” boudoir style, then examine what you have in your closet that can work in photos such as:
- A plain white shirt (boyfriend shirt)
- A Bikini set or a one-piece bathing suit
- A cozy sweater
- kimono or swim cover
- A Loose lace, chiffon or silk top
- A pair of hot shorts
- Lace bra and underwear
- A bodysuit or a corset top
Have a drink
A glass of champagne, wine, or beer will not only be an excellent prop in a photo but sipping alcohol can set the “mood” and help you loosen up a bit.
Accessorize
Look into your accessories and jewelry box for pieces to wear during the boudoir photo session. It could be something like a long pearl necklace, crystals, feathers or hats. They truly help you come up with posing ideas. I found it easier to pose while grabbing onto a pearl necklace!
Use Pinterest to create a boudoir photo session mood board
Pinterest is filled with boudoir photoshoot ideas and suggestions. You can scroll through the feeds and pin your favourite poses to create a mood board. I highly recommend this step because it helps your photographer better understand your vision and plan accordingly.
Identify a place and a time for the photoshoot
You can select to do the photoshoot at a studio or at home. For me, doing it at home seemed more practical because I was able to switch outfits that didn’t end up looking good on camera! The only downfall of home photography is lighting and furniture which might require some prepping and moving. As well, your photographer may suggest a specific time of the day for the boudoir photo session.
