There’s no sign of winding down for sneaker trends in 2020. In fact, it’s been evolving over the last few seasons and every designer has jumped on the sneaker wagon. There are endless styles of sneakers out there which makes it hard to decide which pair to buy. I miss the days when there was that one brand and one style of shoes everyone went after.
As a woman over 40, I’m glad sneakers are more accepted and integrated into fashion now. I appreciate a pair of comfy sneakers since my feet can no longer tolerate the brunt of heels which I lived in throughout adulthood. And I do like the vast options and versatility of sneaker trends ranging from sporty look to statement fashion looks.
Sneaker trends to look for in 2020
This year, the stores will be flooded with bold styles. Expect to see lots of colorful sneakers mainly color-block, and neon styles. Mixing colors and inventing new designs are a nice shift away from the common white sneakers that were very popular in the past few years.
As more people are aware of the benefits of sustainability, many brands have started developing and implementing new recycling and upcycling technologies. In addition, the souring support for veganism is enabling socially responsible brands to look for alternative materials such as cotton and bamboo in shoe designs. Veja sneakers are a perfect example of a company that is investing heavily in sustainable and vegan solutions. And their brand is one of the biggest trends in 2020.
The third notable trend is chunky futuristic style sneakers we consistently see on social media influencers. This particular style appeals to younger women and street style fans. However, in most cases, these styles come with a high price point due to design complexity and affiliation with a fashion luxury.
The last but most relevant trend for women over 40 are vintage-style sneakers, the ones we used to wear in the 80s and 90s. You will feel quite nostalgic and hip wearing them this year along with your Gen Z kids who nicknamed them the “mom and dad sneakers”.
My personal favourite picks (as a woman over 40) are:
Veja. There are two reasons why I chose this brand of sneakers over others. First, the company’s core mission is Social Responsibility through designing sustainable and ethically sourced shoes. The other reason, Veja doesn’t leverage marketing and advertising to promote the brand which means the prices are not inflated to cover such costs. They believe the brand speaks for itself and doesn’t require marketing efforts.
The second style on my list is Fila chunky sneakers in dusty pink. These shoes will match most of my summer outfits.
