Benefits and uses of Rose Water
A Rose is a symbol of love. But do you know Rose water has breathtaking benefits for your skin, body and mind? Just ask Cleopatra who used it as part of her skincare regime. In fact, Rose water has been around for thousands of years, and is used in skincare products, as well as, in foods and drinks.
During my teens and early adulthood stages, I suffered from Acne and skin sensitivity. My mom advised me to apply Rose water on my face to help calm skin irritation and clean the pores. And today, I use it in my daily skincare routine and apply it as a natural toner after cleansing my skin. And believe me ladies, this is the only toner I use on my face due to extreme skin sensitivity.
Five uses of Rose Water
The easiest way to use Rose water is to apply it at night to soothe and tone your skin. However, there are many ways to use Rose water to care for your skin and hair such as:
Face and skin mist
Spritz away Rose water on the face and body after showering to achieve a radiant look.
Smooth frizzy dry hair
If you have dry and frizzy hair, like mine, mix equal parts of Rose water and Glycerin. Apply the mixture to the scalp and massage in for few minutes. Wait about 30 minutes before washing the hair.
Rest the eyes
Long hours of gazing at computer and cellphone screens will tire the eyes. For a quick fix, soak a cotton ball in Rose water and place on your eyes for a minute. This will help reduce puffiness and redness
Makeup removal
I’m not a huge fan of makeup removals. Instead, I use coconut oil with few drops of Rose water on a cotton ball to remove make up. Not only is it natural, but it is also gentle on the face.
Reduce skin irritation
Rose water has one of the greatest anti-inflammatory properties to help soothe skin irritations like eczema and rosacea. I normally soak a cotton pad with Rose water and apply all over my face to reduce the burning and itchy sensation of my sensitive skin.
Other health benefits of Rose water
Soothing sore throat
Traditionally, Rose water is used to ease sore throats. While there isn’t any research study to support it, there are strong evidences that it works. Regardless, there’s no harm in drinking Rose water to refresh and hydrate the body and skin.
Treating infections
Rose water is included in a number of natural and medical treatments because it has powerful antiseptic properties, which can prevent and treat infections. According to one study, Rose water helped treat Pink Eye (conjunctivitis) when it was used in eye drops.
Containing anti-aging properties
Many skin beauty brands, like Lancome, infuse Rose water in their products because it is believed that it has anti-aging effects. This is because Rose petals and Rose oil contain powerful antioxidants which help protect cells from damage. Another study showed that these antioxidants can reduce lipid peroxidation.
Enhancing Mood
Whenever I smell Rose water, I gain a sense of relaxation and comfort. Apparently, Rose water has antidepressant properties and a study found that the extract of Rose petals helped relax the nervous system in mice.
Relieving headaches
Rose water or Rose oil is used in Aromatherapy to relief headaches. This is due to the mood effects and properties in Rose petals and oil. One way to relief headache is to soak a compress in Rose water and place on your head for about half an hour.
Where to find natural Rose water
I highly recommend using 100% natural and distilled Rose water. You can either make your own Rose water which is super simple. However, since many of us have crazy busy lives, it’s easier and more convenient to source out a good product.
How to make Rose water
All you need is either fresh or dry organic Rose petals and distilled water. You can find dry organic Rose petals here.
Direction
- 1/4 cup of dried rose petals.
- 1 1/2 cups distilled water.
- Strainer and a metal saucepan.
- Place the rose petals and water in a metal saucepan. Cover and bring to a boil.
- Reduce temperature and allow the water to simmer until the color of the rose petals has faded. It should take 10 to 15 minutes.
- Leave the lid on and cool completely.
- Pour water and petals through the strainer into a clean bottle.
- Store in the refrigerator for several weeks or on the counter for up to one week.
My favourite Rose Water products
You cannot go wrong with a product that has great reviews and 100% purity.
The best travel necessity to keep in your purse. Refresh your skin and relax with these Rose water wipes.
Drinking Rose team is very calming and refreshing. I normally preferred sweetened chilled Rose tea with ice-cubes to hydrate after a workout or on a hot day.
Yes I have to rave about Lancome Absolue. This product is incredible and feels so good on the skin. It’s best to apply it with your fingers rather than using a cotton pad. OK it’s a splurge but we all deserve to pamper ourselves once in a while.
