I love changing my hairstyle regularity because I get bored of having it the same style for long. It’s one of the beauty routines I enjoy experimenting with at least once a year. People who know me on a personal level are probably smiling now and agree with the statement. And since it’s a new year and a new decade, it is time to update the look and explore the latest hairstyle trends again. If you are curious about the latest hairstyle trends for 2020, then keep reading this blog and you won’t be disappointed.
How do I choose a hairstyle trend?
Face shape
Before deciding on a hairstyle, I always investigate and review the latest trends that can be suitable for my face shape. As you already know, a hairstyle has to complement the shape of your face. Luckily, most haircuts seem to work well on my heart-shaped face. BUT…
Hair texture
But not all hairstyle trends work well because my hair is very frizzy and curly. For example, haircuts with very sharp corners or short bangs don’t work on my hair. I always select hairstyle trends that will work and cooperate well with curly hair.
Collect samples
I usually narrow down my choices to a maximum of 3 hairstyle trends and save images on the mobile phone. By doing so, I can show them to the hairdresser who ultimately helps pick the final look. Sometimes, the hairdresser might suggest tweaking the hairstyle to work better with my hair texture.
Mind my age
Now that I’m in my midlife, I am noticing significant changes in hair texture and character. It’s drier, thinner and breaks easily (PS: I wrote about this subject here). As much as I love the look of extra long hair, I find it much more difficult to keep it looking healthy, shiny and luscious. Plus I don’t have the time and patience to style it each day. In fact, I never had the chance to grow my hair extra long. Last year, I tried short hair for the first time in 5 years and it was great – except it required ongoing maintenance!
What are the top hairstyle trends for 2020?
This year’s hairstyle trends celebrate the roaring 20s, a time when people indulged in new styles, women worked in white-collar jobs and flourished in the consumer economy. Signature haircuts that were symbols of female freedom and a break from conservatism 100 years ago are making a comeback. These hairstyle trends celebrate the birth of women’s social liberation and I am one who likes to celebrate this important milestone.

Blunt Bob
The Bob hairstyle was the look for the rebellious young women in the 1920s and the “Swinging Sixties”. Blunt bob is the HOTTEST hairstyle trend in 2020 and is already fashioned by many celebrities and social media influencers. It’s a classic look for mature women and one of the easiest styles to work with. Take a look at Monica Bellucci and Celine Dion in popular bob hairstyles.

Short Pixie
The pixie was invented in the 1920s but it wasn’t as popular as the bob hairstyle at that time. In fact, it wasn’t until Audrey Hepburn cut her hair for the princess role in Roman Holiday movie and popularizing the pixie hairstyle in the 50s. Here are images of guests with pixie hairstyles at Paris Spring/Summer 2020 Fashion Show.

Longer lengths
Not every woman in the 20s was comfortable cutting her hair short. And even today, women prefer keeping their hair long, or very long. The good news is your longer locks are a popular trend and this is presumably due to increased awareness around avoiding chemicals and heat damage, as well as, improved ingredients in hair care products. If you are blessed with thick and strong hair, then go ahead, flaunt it, even if it has silver streaks. Take a look at some of our favourite middle-aged female celebrities with their inspiring long hairstyles.

Hair Accessories
The 1920s were illustrious for elaborate and opulent hair accessories. In 2019, we witnessed the return of pearl and rhinestone hairpieces, headbands and tiaras. This trend is still a hit in 2020 so hold on to the pieces you bought last year.
Some of the most popular styles include pearl, tortoiseshell and rhinestone hair accessories, bows, pastel, and leopard print hairpieces. Here are some of the styles I fetched your daughter would kill to have (wink).
