The world of fashion is filled with classic and fading trends. Although fashion repeats itself, there are some styles and trends that are worth the investment and the space in our wardrobe. And even though these styles are reinvented each season, they remain chief pieces in every designer collection. Since we are approaching Fall, it’s essential to start planning and shopping for these warm and cosy fashion trends.
So what sort of Fall fashion should you be investing in this year?
What’s beautiful about Fall fashion trends is that they can carry on into Winter and Spring in some places. Here in Canada, we have long cold seasons and tend to invest in specific pieces that can last few seasons. And because Fall fashion clothes are made with heavier material, they have the tendency to last longer which might just be worth the investment.
Capes
They just keep coming back in style because we love capes and they truly look elegant and fierce.
How and when to wear Capes: They are ideal for Fall season as they offer a protective layer from the northern winds. Capes look amazing with anything and anywhere. You can wear them with a pair of jeans, leather pants, skirts and even with dresses.
Work wear: I can see you walking into a client meeting looking fierce and confident in a cape. Wear it girlfriend.

Asymmetrical neckline
I am a huge fan of asymmetrical neckline as long as it’s tailored well. These are tricky pieces to make and you’re better off investing in a good piece. They are edgy and modern, as well as, a fashion fall trend must have. Don’t be afraid to try an asymmetrical neckline top or dress this Fall, but make sure it sits well on your body. There’s no sense in wearing a trendy item that doesn’t make you feel comfortable. Start trying on different pieces at different retail stores to find the right fit.
How and when to wear Asymmetrical neckline: Asymmetrical neckline should always be the focal piece of clothing. The whole purpose is to showcase the artistry of an asymmetrical piece. Therefore, wear simple bottoms like pencil skirts or plain pants and jeans with an asymmetrical neckline top. Less is more and that’s an elegant statement to make.
Work wear: This would depend on work environment. Some corporate environments can be very conservative and others more relaxed. Best is to stick to work attire requirements if they exist or follow the vibe of your work tribe.

Prairie dresses
Floral prairie dresses make a wonderful transition from Summer to Fall. They carry a romantic aura perfect on a gentle Fall day.
How and when to wear them: floral dresses are versatile and for this Fall, dark floral prints are very trendy. You can wear a floral dress with a jean jacket, a blazer and a pair of boots for that perfect bourgeois look. It’s really that simple.
Work wear: Yes absolutely. No further preaching for this look.

Belted smart suits
Smart suits are always on trend and are a must have in every woman’s wardrobe. See my previous post here featuring smart suits as a summer trend. The beauty of this trend is that you don’t need to buy a new belted suit. Just invest in a cute little belt and voila.
How and when to wear a belted smart suit: Besides work, a suit makes a sexy ensemble for an evening event, such as a gala, or a fancy dinner.
Work wear: You should definitely wear a belted smart suit this season.
Where to shop for a great belt
Regardless of your size, these delicate belts will look great with any piece of clothing.
Plaids
Designers are mad for plaids and the preppy look. Did you even see Chanel’s gorgeous black and white houndstooth? I recall this look was a huge trend in the 90s but this time, designers are reinventing plaids with bright colors and large patterns.
How and when to wear plaids: Think preppy old school bourgeois look like three piece sets, or a polo shirt with a sweater vest. I personally choose to wear a plaids bottom with a Pussy-bow blouse which are a staple in my fall/winter wardrobe.
Work wear: Of course. Needless to say, they add character to the overall look.

Quilted puffy outerwear
It goes without saying that quilted puffy outerwear is always a trend in the good old North. Last year, and for the first time, I bought a cute puffy jacket and loved wearing it throughout Fall and Winter. It was light, warm and worth every single penny. This is just one of those things Canadians can justify spending the extra dollar on.
How and when to wear puffy outerwear: when it’s cold.
Work wear: It really doesn’t matter as long as you have a hanger for it.

Animal print
They keep saying animal prints are in this season. In fact, animal prints are classic and a must have in any season. I cannot describe how much I love Leopard print, for example. My wardrobe is filled with this pattern in dresses, tops, pants and skirts and I wear them every season.
How and when to wear animal print: For work, opt for a classic cut shirt, pants, skirt or dress and avoid over-accessorizing. A Leopard shirt combined with a smart suit is a bang on look to the office. As for casual or evening wear, you can be as adventurous and wild as you like to. Mixing Leopard prints with bright colored pieces such as red makes a powerful statement.
Work wear: Remember to keep it simple and classic.

Long coats
The Fall fashion runway has spoken and said we all need some drama, in our coats. This is the one thing missing in my wardrobe but I really want to find a piece that’s classic and contemporary. After all, we experience long cold days living in Canada and it’s nice to have multiple pieces of outerwear and coats to switch up the look.
