A style guide to horse racing events
As soon as May approaches, so does the old tradition of horse racing. Here, in North America, this sport began in 1665 in Long Island and became widely popular after the US civil war. In fact, the Kentucky Derby is one of the oldest sporting events in North America and became the place where women flaunted their finest hats and dresses.
The tradition of wearing hats became widely popular in recent years as a fun way to lose yourself for a day. Because it’s considered the sport of kings, when we put on something special like a fascinator or a hat, we feel like queens and princesses.
Now let’s talk about the dress protocol or code at horse races
Until I got an invitation to attend Greenwood Stakes in Toronto, I had no idea there was a horse race dress code! I mean I’ve seen many photos and heard about major horse racing events such as Kentucky Derby, Royal Ascot and Queens Plate, but it was a surprise to find out that some races have a strict dress code. Therefore, if you plan on attending a horse race, it’s a good idea to check the event website for dress codes as they are usually published online. So, here’s a quick overview of fashion by the racetrack and how to dress at a horse race:
Women’s Horse Track Fashion
Dress to impress
This is your chance to show off your best spring or summer fashion, so dress to impress and get creative. For instance, think floral prints, cheerful colors, pastels, bold stripes, feathers or anything that brings you joy and makes you feel fabulous.
Wear a statement piece
Don’t fuss about being overdressed! By all means wear something that will make you stand out, like a pair of bright pumps, or a statement bag. If you are wearing a colorful dress, keep your shoes neutral. On the other hand, if the dress is neural or single-tone, wear colorful shoes. However, it doesn’t matter whether you wear heels or flats. It’s a long day and you don’t want your shoes to get stuck on the ground so opt for comfort.
Pair with the only accessory that matters: an outstanding hat
Look for a hat or fascinator that fits your style and matches the outfit. As a matter of fact, this is the one accessory you want to have fun with. It can be as classic, adventurous or even as ridiculous as you want it.
Adhere to sartorial etiquette
Some horse race events have strict dress code like Royal Ascot in the UK. In general, the code is usually in respect to hem line, hat size and coverage. If you are attending such a high profile event, lucky you, check the event website for dress etiquettes. After all, I really would want you to fit in and feel glamorous.
Wear sunglasses
Bring your sunglasses even if you are staying inside. After all, you’ll be moving around and outside and it’s quite a long day. As well, if it’s a sunny day, sun glare might be too strong and may fatigue your eyes.
And don’t forget to pack an umbrella and sunscreen!
You never know Mother Nature’s plan for the day. Fo example, in some countries like Canada, weather can change at a spur of the moment. In short, have a small umbrella handy to protect your outfit and hat.
Likewise, make sure to protect your skin from the sunrays even on a cloudy day. And, remember again, it is a long day for a horse race and your skin will appreciate the protection.
Men’s Horse Track Fashion
Wear a jacket
It’s preferable to wear a lightweight suit or a sports jacket since it’s probably warm at the racetrack. Although, it’s not a requirement in most North American races, it does, however, add an element of sophistication and style. As you know, one can never be overdressed at a horse race, and in the same fashion, sports jackets were made for watching horse race events!
Even though, wearing a jacket might not be mandatory at some horse race events, men can opt it for pastel shirts and ties, and cardigans. In fact, a tie can be any color that matches well with the shirt and jacket.
Accessorize
Even if a man opts for a suit, sports jacket, or just a shirt, he can also fun with hats or socks! For example, think of these colorful socks, fedora, or bowler hat that may be sitting in your closet.
Again, fancy it up with elegant belts, pocket squares or a designer watch. After all, it’s all about having fun and playing dress up.
Kids Horse Track Fashion
Introducing the little ones to the racetrack and event ambiance is a fascinating idea. Accordingly, dress the kids in fashionable clothing that fit the weather. As an example, you may chose to coordinate your outfits or make them feel comfy in theirs. As well, since there’s lots of walking, have them wear comfortable shoes. It’s best to inform them about the event and dress code ahead of time so they can anticipate and be prepared to play dress up. Sometimes, like my own, kids may refuse to get dressed for an event but with a bit of preparation they might be more accommodating.
What to pack for a horse race event?
If you have little ones, bring with you some water, change of clothes, sunscreen, and snacks.
And, don’t forget an umbrella!
If you don’t have assigned seats, bring folding chairs if venue permits it.
In summary, the number one rule when attending a horse race is to have fun and mingle with people. So make sure to enjoy yourself and make it memorable for everyone with you.
