I never thought aging would change the shape, color and density of my eyebrows. Being a Mediterranean woman meant having hair everywhere and waxing, threading and tweezing are torturous beauty routines we do to avoid looking like Apes. Now that I’m in my 40s, I’ve noticed a significant change in hair volume and ‘behaviour’ which seems to shift from my head and eyebrows to parts I definitely want to stay clean and smooth. And that’s not all. Grey strands of hair are slowly creeping in to the eyebrows making them look thinner and less structured. Alas that the irony of aging comes in unexpected forms.
Eyebrows after 40
If you are in your 40s, you probably remember the past eyebrow trends from the bushy 80s to the slender 90s and today’s sleek shapes. All these years of tweezing, plucking and aging have wrecked havoc on our arches. And you know, well groomed and clear eyebrows will frame the face and take years off.
In the past couple of years, I’ve tried numerous products to shape them and learned a few things along the way. One thing I came to realize is that I should focus on balancing the look of my eyebrows instead of attempting to re-shape them. I need eyebrows that are suitable for my mature face, and that meant making some changes to eyebrow shaping routine.
Trimming
I noticed that some strands of eyebrow hair are becoming more wiry and completely out of shape. So instead of plucking them, I started trimming these curly strands with an eyebrow scissor. By doing this, I avoid over plucking or creating any gaps in them.
Minimize Tweezing
Since hair is already thinning out and turning grey, there’s really no need to pluck eyebrows. I only tweeze hair that grows outside the natural eyebrow line, or whatever is left of it.
Fill in the gaps
In order to give eyebrows a nice definition, I use an eyebrow pencil to fill in the gaps. I found Benefit Cosmetics Precisely to be the BEST pencil to give them a natural look. The tip is very fine making it easy to shape eyebrows. I tried other pencils and brands, but always end up going back this particular one each time. It doesn’t smudge and lasts about 12 hours.
Cover Grey Strands
One of the things I struggle with is matching my hair color to my eyebrows color. Because I have so much grey hair on my head, I cannot color it light brown anymore (my natural hair color). Grey hair seems to grow out so fast that it’s becoming difficult and expensive to manage. Therefore, I have been bleaching my hair platinum which blends well with grey. BUT, my eyebrows are naturally brown and I don’t want to bleach them. Instead, I use volumizing eyebrow gel to cover up the grey eyebrow strands. I find it to be the most effective way to achieve a natural eyebrow color. Again for this purpose, I am obsessed with Benefits eyebrow gel which comes in many shades.
Restore
To minimize further hair loss on my eyebrows, and even lashes, I use Castor oil and special eyebrow serum. In fact, I started using Castor oil on my eyelashes as a teenage girl after my mom said that it helps make them look longer. Basically, I use a clean eyelash brush to apply the oil on my lashes and eyebrows before going to bed. Give it a try.
Tutorials
I learned a lot from watching YouTube tutorials on how to shape eyebrows after 40. I highly recommend searching for videos on YouTube where you can learn some interesting makeup tips for women over 40.
My Favourite Eyebrow Products
It took me a couple of years to find the right eyebrow shaping products. Benefits Cosmetics has a great selection to try for yourself. As for nourishing eyebrows, Castor is a natural oil that won’t harm your skin. For trimming, I use a curved beauty scissor which I could not live without.
Summary: Nicely shaped eyebrows can take years off our looks. There are a number of unconventional ways to shape our eyebrows but if you want a natural look, invest in the right products and search for online tutorials. Many physical changes start to show after we reach 40. Among them is hair volume and texture. I wrote this article on how we can take care of our hair as we age. I love your eyebrow tips. If your ready to get more of a permanent eyebrow on, do you have any recommendations of a qualified artist?
Glad you loved the tips 🙂 I have very sensitive skin and cannot go with “permanent” eyebrow procedure. From what I know, the procedure involves making small cuts in the skin and injecting color. And apparently, it’s not really permanent which means we have to go back and get it done again.
