In North America, a kitchen is the heart of a family home, and a spot everyone loves to together at for meals, coffee breaks, homework, and conversations. It’s interesting that whenever we have people over, everyone intuitively assembles in the kitchen, either around the kitchen table or island. This high traffic area is, as a result, infamous for attracting germs, dust, and buildup. Cleaning a kitchen is a dreadful ritual, yet a necessity for keeping a hygienic and a healthy home atmosphere. Here are some of my personal simple ideas to spring clean your kitchen.
Section your kitchen
Spring cleaning the kitchen in one day seems like an impossible task for busy moms, career women, and entrepreneurs. Needless to say that a modern kitchen tends to be one of the largest areas of the house, as well as, the dirtiest. The way I clean mine is by sectioning the area and schedule a cleanup over a weekend in Spring:
- Spice cabinet
- Food pantry
- Fridge
- Oven/Stove
- Small appliances including microwave, coffee maker, toaster, etc
- Kitchen island
- Dinnerwear cabinets
- Pots and Pans cabinets
- Drawers (utensils, kitchen clothes, flatware)
Cleaning products
I simply use dish detergent, warm water, a bowl, and a sponge to clean the shelves. With a drop of detergent in a bowl filled with warm water, dip in a sponge, squeeze out excess water and start wiping the shelves. To dry them, use a damp cloth and leave the cabinet open to air dry the shelves. It’s as simple as this.
Cleaning process
Once you figure out how to section the kitchen for spring cleaning, start removing all the items in the cabinet in that particular section. For example, empty the food pantry from all items and place them on the counters or kitchen table. Use the cleaning products to wipe the shelves and the inside walls, then leave the pantry open to air dry the inside. For the doors, I prefer a mild and naturally derived surface cleaner such as Method All-Purpose cleaner, which is a non-toxic, plant-based cleaner that cuts grease and grime. I’ve been using this brand for a few years to clean everything including bathrooms, and flat surfaces like doors and counters.
Sort out kitchen supplies
After you pull out all the items within a kitchen section (food pantries for example), start checking the expiry dates and sorting out what goes back in the pantry or set for disposal.
By doing this, you’ll also be able to “audit” your kitchenware for duplicate items or outdated and obsolete items. This includes old utensils, Tupperware, frying pans, plates, and glassware.
List preparation
While you work on spring cleaning the kitchen in sections, write down a list of food items to replenish and kitchenware to replace. Once done cleaning the kitchen, input the list on a spreadsheet sorted by type: food and kitchenware and keep it handy for the next shopping trip.
Must buy kitchen tools!
Kitchen tools are the most used up and consumed items in the house. Therefore, I often try to buy them when there’s a good deal at my favourite stores. Today, Nordstrom announced a 25% (more on some items) on almost everything online. It’s the perfect time to replace our coffee maker which has been leaking for a month now. I’ve come across some great kitchen items to add to my shopping cart now 😉
