I miss celebrating Valentine’s Day at a fancy restaurant and the opera. As a couple and parents, we always include our only child when planning something for V Day because he’s the product of our love. This year is not an exception, even though the pandemic is wearing us down. We want to have some fun in an intimate indoor picnic fun instead of going out.
Why an indoor picnic
We live in Canada, and February is one of the coldest months of the year. It’s unlikely that we can enjoy a picnic when the windchill can make it uncomfortable to be outside. And since we’re still in a lockdown state here in Ontario, we are cautious about going out even though we’re bored of staying at home. Therefore, I wanted to do something more creative to take our minds off the pandemic and life the spirit.
How to prepare an indoor picnic
The first thing you want to do is choose a spot in your home for the picnic. I picked an area in front of the fireplace in the family room. After selecting a spot, decorate the space with valentine’s themed articles. For example, spread a picnic blanket and place decorative pillows, rose petals, or stuffed animals around the blanket. You can also lay candles or string lights for a splendid evening ambiance. If you chose to set the picnic blanket against a wall, decorate the wall with garlands. You can find an excellent selection of Wall décor at Amazon.
Meal ideas
Now let’s figure out some meal ideas. Traditionally most couples like to go out for a nice dinner. But because of the pandemic, many restaurants might not be open for dining. Therefore opt for catered dinner, delivered meals, or have everyone at home some sandwiches and snacks as if you were going out for a real picnic. I am leaning towards ordering pizza and indulging on chocolate fondue afterward.
Drinks
To spark things up, pop a bottle of wine or Champagne and bring out your fancy glasses for an extra touch of elegance. But if you have kids and prefer a non-alcoholic beverage, prepare hot chocolate for everyone.
Let’s get ready to stay home
And what’s a picnic without a Picnic basket! If you don’t have one, I suggest buying the Picnic basket that comes with a set of cutlery, napkins, and glasses. And for a full-blown picnic experience, wear cute summer outfits, such as floral dresses, gingham shirts, sandals, and hats. Now turn on the TV and tune in for a marathon of the best romantic Hollywood movies. What’s your favourite movie?
