This article highlights the best-rated shampoo for gray hair
I tried for two years to rock the silver mane and couldn’t. The transition to gray hair wasn’t as I envisioned it to be. Each time the roots grew out, my hair side part appeared bolding and patchy. Unlike the empowering photos of female celebrities flaunting their radiant and luscious silver locks, my curls looked wiry and frizzy. The gray grow out in uneven spots, not like the salt and pepper locks women aspire to have. Then I thought maybe if I bleach my hair and go platinum my hair color (or lack of color) would be even. That didn’t work either. Once the roots started to grow, my scalp looked so patchy and I looked like Sylvester the Skunk, or more like SILVERster the Skunk. Plus, since my hair is naturally curly and dry, bleaching damaged my hair, made it more frizzy and easily breakable. The maintenance was worst. So I gave up on the idea (for now at least) and I am back to coloring the silver roots until further notice.
As beautiful as it looks on women with straight tresses, gray hair can be unmanageable if your hair is naturally curly and dry. You have to use special nourishing hair products and shampoo for gray hair regardless of your natural hair texture. And you have to be mindful about heat styling and UV-rays as they further damage aging hair making it lose its luster. These silver locks are difficult to tame for reasons like:
Gray hair is wiry and coarse
You will notice that your hair texture is different. This is because gray hair lacks melanin, the natural pigmentation responsible for your hair and skin color. Melanin is also responsible for providing a protective layer for hair. The lack of melanin makes your hair thinner resulting in wiry or coarse hair texture. And as it becomes more coarse and dry, you’ll have to wash it with specialty shampoo for gray hair.
Gray hair lacks shine
Another common problem with gray hair is dullness. Curly hair, in particular, lacks oil naturally, and once your gray starts to grow, your curls will become even less shiny. This is because sebum, the natural oil your sebaceous glands once produced, begins to dwindle. The oil, responsible for your hair’s radiance, conditions your hair, nourishes, and protects it. That’s why it’s important to use rich conditioners and nourishing oils regularly to keep it shiny and soft.
More Breakage
Gray hair is more fragile, making it more prone to breakage because the cuticles are thinner than hair with natural color. Consequently, your gray locks need unique products to protect them from harsh elements like ultraviolet rays, humidity, heat, and chemicals.
Should you change your hair shampoo?
Most women couldn’t go to the salons during the pandemic and ask their stylists to cover the gray roots. However, the pandemic enabled women to let their roots grow out and embrace their natural shades of gray. Still, if not nourished and cared for, gray hair is challenging to look groomed and fresh. And now, there are so many excellent products designed for gray and aging hair. These top-ranking shampoos will help minimize dullness, yellowing and make the hair look as radiant as a silver crown.
