Slip dresses popularized in the 90s have become a staple fashion style in recent years and for good reasons. It is a versatile piece of clothing one can wear in different ways, occasions and seasons. However, wearing a slip dress in the frigid Canadian winter requires some layering. As you know, slip dresses are made with satin or silk material which are naturally cooling fabrics. Therefore, satin or silk aren’t popular clothing choices in winter and won’t keep you warm if not layered correctly.
When to wear a slip dress
The nice thing about slip dresses is that you can wear them most of the year. Although they are great summer staples, they can also be transitional pieces for early spring and autumn. Another time to wear a slip dress is during a winter getaway vacation to a tropical destination. But if you dig the winter look with a slip dress, then find a way to keep your legs warm during cold winter days by wearing boots, leggings and proper tops.
How to wear a slip dress
If you want to experiment with layering or mixing and matching pieces with your dress, then take into consideration your shape and height. We cannot expect to look good in every style idea and shouldn’t try too hard to make it fit. As a petite woman, I know that long blazers make me appear shorter when I wear them with dresses, skirts or belted. This also applies to plus size women in my personal opinion. The trick to looking taller and slimmer is to layer with shorter tops and narrow belts. Here are some of my personal favourite looks.
Summer Look
In summer, I usually wear a slip dress with a pair of flat sandals or sneakers in the daytime. For an evening and a more chic look, I’ll replace flats with a pair of heeled sandals and accessories with bling.
In this photo, I wore my favourite dress to an evening event last summer and accessorized with heeled sandals, a necklace, and a bejeweled clutch.
Fall Look
In early Fall when the weather is still warm but nippy, you can layer a slip dress with a denim or leather jacket for a feminine grudge or street style look. And instead of sandals, switch to a pair of booties or calf-length boots to stay warm.
In this photo, I chose to wear a loose black sweater over a yellow slip dress. Since I’m a petite woman, I opted to wear the belt looser so that my torso appears longer.
Now since my feet tend to get cold quickly, I put on a pair of black booties to match the top. A simple turquoise necklace helped add some color and character to this ensemble.
However, on a colder Fall or Spring day, try wearing a loose sweater or a long blazer above the dress. If you are blessed with a slim waistline, add a belt around the loose sweater or blazer.
Instead of a belt, try accessorizing with a colorful scarf.
Winter Look
This winter, I switched up my style and tried a vintage look. For this trendy seventies-style look, you can wear a fitted turtleneck sweater or top under the slip dress.
Spring Look
Spring in Canada can be on the cool side. However, after a long gray winter, I look forward to wearing colorful outfits. I enjoy mixing and matching colors as soon as the temperature starts to rise. This look is all about being creative and celebrating spring in my mauve slip dress, denim jacket, and green pumps.
