Street style fashion has been around since the 50s, primarily in British fashion. Gladly, this free spirited look has recently become widely popular and trendy. Even our favourite influencers and fashionistas race to pull the best street style look to show off at fashion shows and style events.
What is street style fashion?
Street style represents the raw and authentic arts and the diverse lifestyle the of urban youth. It can be seen in some of the interesting pieces which characterize this unique form of expression such as neons, baggy styles, hoodies and more. If you think about it, the style mimics widely popular urban cultures and art forms we grew up knowing such as jazz, hippie, punk, hip hop, blues and R&B lifestyles, all of which, have been a form of inspiration to urban fashion.
How to wear street style in midlife?
I started experimenting with street style fashion two years ago when I realized it was progressively becoming acceptable for older women to wear youthful fashion. I wanted to expand my repertoire of style and, at the same time, recycle and re-use classical pieces in a modern and trendy way. Realizing that my wardrobe had some beautiful pieces, which are difficult for me to giveaway or rid of, I began exploring new ways of putting them together.
There are couple of things to keep in mind when you want to wear street style
- Street style is an individualist and personal art: This means allow yourself to explore your own style and imagination. It’s an attempt to show your own personal taste and artistic capabilities.
- Street style is a rebellion from the ordinary: Unlike mainstream fashion, street style fashion has no rules and codes on how to dress. It’s about what you perceive as your personal style.
- Themed ideas: as a start, I suggest you find a theme for your street style look. For example, pick an urban cultural theme you like or associate with like grudge, punk, retro and bohos, as examples. Then start finding and putting together different pieces that resemble the theme. That should give you a perspective on how to create your own street style look.
Channelling my inner hipster
In this featured look, I express the typical urban hipster look using some trendy pieces for this season: a classic plaid big blazer and belting. But since I’m a petite woman, belting a blazer made me look even shorter and bulky. Instead, I opted to wear the trendy Off–White belt with a pair of black pants.
The other feature in this street style outfit is layering, which is an amazing way to diversify a look in the fall season. That’s not all, it’s one of the best ways to deal with the unpredictable menopausal hot flashes. I can take off the blazer, and unbutton my shirt when I feel uncomfortable or hot at work. And if I’m in a less formal setting, I could just take off the shirt and cool off in a simple tank top and a trendy choker necklace.
As for shoes, I experimented with wearing cute elegant pumps for a feminine more formal 9 to 5 look, and sneakers for a casual or weekend look.
When to wear street style fashion
In recent years, thanks to the Millennials, the street style look has made its way into every lifestyle including work, fashion and social events. Many corporations have also relaxed the work dress code and people are loving the business casual policy. Fashion brands are utilizing the street style smarts in their collections to make it easier and acceptable to wear it in any occasion. For example, take a look at the latest sneaker style which has become a popular trend. Not only are they reserved to active wear, but they’ve become a staple chic look we’ve been spotting at work and on the streets.
