Valentine’s Day is fast approaching and for many of us mature people, celebrating goes beyond candlelight dinners at a local restaurant and roses. We’re looking for intimate ways to enjoy this romantic Hallmark event at home with our families, friends, and loved ones. Here’s how I plan to spend Valentine’s Day this year along with eleven simple yet creative ways you too can try.
Love is the whole thing. We are only pieces.
Rumi
To set the mood, I’m going all out with the home ambiance and treats. Just like Christmas, I plan to bring some cheers around the house with fresh flower arrangements, and new diffuser scents, buy a silky pajama set, and prepare tasteful delights. Most importantly, I look forward to showing my hubby and child all the love and care they deserve. Below are 10 ideas for a special Valentine’s Day at home with your loved ones and family.
Indoor picnic
Outdoor picnics are very romantic and poetic in spring, summer, or even fall. However, it’s almost impossible to have a picnic in the middle of winter, particularly in February, one of the coldest months in the northern hemisphere. And since most people won’t be able to go out, we can play pretend at home. Lay down an old blanket or a picnic blanket in the living room or basement, bring a cute picnic basket, and a bottle of Champaign, and spread some finger food on the blanket. And don’t forget to surround yourself with some indoor greenery and roses.
Chocolate feast
Indulge in the comfort of chocolate fondue and your desired fruits at home this Valentine’s Day. Enjoy this superfood with your date or even your family and children. It might just make that indoor picnic more enjoyable.
Games night
Board and trivia games spark up conversations and laughter and stimulate competition. When the night comes and is long, games are a fun way to pass the time. The classic Monopoly game is my favourite to play with the family for hours at a time. Each one of us has a competitive streak that wants to take over the village. But I have wicked plans (wink) and will say to the boys: watch your backs, here comes the Monopoly tycoon.
Mix it up
Missing your preferred drink served at a particular bar or restaurant? Me too! Although I don’t drink, I sometimes enjoy a good glass of Old Fashioned served by a skilled bartender. How about signing up for a virtual mixology class or buying a drink recipes book?
Virtual cooking class
Make Valentine’s Day at home special by signing up for a virtual cooking class. Some websites offer interactive lessons covering different meal ideas that include ethnic dishes, traditional recipes, desserts, and bread. Sur La Table provides affordable household classes starting at $29. Or if you don’t want to join an interactive class, you can download Valentine-style meals at Goldbelly!
Give each other a massage
Set the mood and light up some candles, turn on some relaxing music, grab body oil and give your loved one a gentle massage from head to toe.
Hiking
With limited access to public indoor locations, people are resorting to nature to stay active and healthy. Instead of spending Valentine’s Day at home the entire Day, bundle up, fill your thermos mug with a warm beverage (hot chocolate is a great choice), and traverse the woods. The forest is a romantic and peaceful sanctuary to explore during winter.
Backyard fire
There are so many other ways to enjoy Valentine’s Day at home. If you have a backyard and your city bylaws permit, set up a fire pit and enjoy some vino with toasted marshmallows and music while you cozy up in blankets.
Breakfast in bed
Breakfast in bed is a traditional way to celebrate Valentine’s Day at home. Kick it up a notch this year by preparing a feast of their loved delights like heart-shaped cookies, fresh pastries, chocolate, and some mimosa cocktail!
Write a love letter
Writing a love letter may have become a thing of the past, except it’s still a poetic gesture to hand it to your loved one. Use vintage stationery paper and write letters to your partner, children, parents, and friends.
Plan your dream vacation
Many are looking forward to a nice vacation once things get back to normal. This is the best time to plan a dream vacation that lifts up your spirits. Instead of going online to search for a destination, which takes the romance out of Valentine’s Day at home, do it the old fashioned way. Buy a destination book and flip through the pages, mark attractions to want to see and start setting a budget.

Great post! I’m a single pringle this year 😅, but I’m pretty sure this would be helpful to those who are trying to figure out what to do on Valentine’s day.
So many cute ideas here! Some I may have to use as I have no idea what I will be doing this year! Great post!

Good to start planning now. These are some great romantic ideas. Breakfast in bed. A nice cocktail and then chocolate sampling. Nice.
I love the virtual cooking class idea!
